What interior painting costs in Atlanta, GA

An interior quote is mostly labor, and most of that labor is prep. The rooms, the ceilings, the trim and the condition of the walls matter more than the paint itself.

Quick answer

Interior painting in Atlanta averages about $2,021, with most projects between $964 and $3,079, according to Angi's 2026 Atlanta data. A single room can start around $400, while a whole home can pass $10,000. Prep adds $0.50 to $3 per square foot, and older homes with detailed trim and plaster run 20 to 40 percent higher in labor.

Typical interior painting prices in Atlanta

Angi's 2026 data for Atlanta puts the average interior project at about $2,021, with most falling between $964 and $3,079. Another Atlanta painting company publishes a range from about $400 for one room to $10,000 or more for a whole home. Local painters charge roughly $20 to $90 an hour, and paint itself runs about $20 to $60 a gallon.

These are planning numbers from published sources, not a quote. Two houses with the same square footage can land far apart once ceiling height, trim and wall condition are counted.

What actually drives the price

Wall area and room count set the base. Ceiling height is next: stairwells, vaulted living rooms and two-story foyers need poles, planks or scaffolding. Trim is slow work, since baseboards, crown and paneled doors are brushed by hand; cabinetry, textured walls and ornate trim add about $2 to $6 per square foot in local data.

Condition matters most of all. Prep such as patching, sanding and wallpaper removal adds roughly $0.50 to $3 per square foot. A room full of anchor holes, water stains or peeling paint costs more than a room that only needs a new color.

Why older intown houses cost more

Atlanta's older homes, especially the Victorian and Craftsman houses intown, often have plaster walls, many layers of old paint and detailed trim. Angi's Atlanta data puts the labor premium for that kind of house at 20 to 40 percent over a standard interior.

Houses built before 1978 may also have lead paint under the newer coats, which changes how sanding and scraping are done and adds setup and cleanup. It's a cost worth planning for rather than being surprised by.

How long an interior repaint lasts

Atlanta interiors generally need repainting every 5 to 7 years, sooner in hallways, kitchens, kids' rooms and anywhere hands and furniture touch the walls. Ceilings and bedrooms usually last longest; entries and stair walls go first.

Sheen affects that clock. Satin and eggshell clean up without losing their finish, so they stretch the time between repaints in busy rooms, while flat paint hides flaws best but marks easily. Choosing the right sheen per room is one of the cheapest ways to make a repaint last.

Per room, per hour or per job

Some painters quote per room, some by the hour, most by the job after a walk-through. A per-room price is easy to compare but can hide what's included; an hourly rate leaves the total open. A job price with the scope written out is usually the clearest.

Whichever way it's quoted, ask what's in it: ceilings, trim, doors, closets, patching and how many coats.

Reading an interior quote

A clear interior quote lists:

  • Which rooms and which surfaces: walls, ceilings, trim, doors
  • Furniture moving and floor protection
  • Patching, caulking and stain priming
  • Paint line, sheen and number of coats
  • Any lead-safe work in pre-1978 homes
  • Cleanup and a final walk-through

Ways to keep interior costs down

Empty rooms paint faster than furnished ones, so clearing shelves and small furniture yourself helps. Painting ceilings and trim at the same visit as the walls costs less than bringing a crew back later. Choosing one color family for connected rooms saves cutting time at every doorway.

The places not to save are patching and priming. Paint over unprimed patches flashes, and paint over stains bleeds; both cost more to fix than to do right.
