Exterior door and shutter painting

Front door, shutter and garage door painting in Atlanta

The front door, shutters and garage door carry more of a house's curb appeal than the siding does. They're also the surfaces that fade and peel first, because they take the most sun and handling.

Quick answer

Front door and shutter painting in Atlanta starts with identifying the material, since wood, steel, fiberglass, vinyl and aluminum each need different prep and primer. We clean, sand, prime where needed and apply exterior enamel, removing hardware rather than taping around it. Dark colors on doors facing full sun are chosen with care, because they heat up and can warp some materials.

The job

Small surfaces, big effect

These pieces are painted by hand and seen up close, so brush marks, drips and paint on the hardware all show. Doors are painted in a set order, panels first, then rails and stiles.

We use exterior enamels such as Benjamin Moore Regal or Modern Masters Front Door Paint, Rust-Oleum direct-to-metal primers on steel, and Minwax Helmsman spar urethane over stained wood doors.

What moves the price

What moves the price of door and shutter painting

  1. Number of pieces

Each door and pair of shutters is prepped and painted by hand.

  2. Material

Steel, wood, fiberglass and vinyl need different primers.

  3. Condition

Rust, peeling or cracked finish adds prep time.

  4. Paint or stain

Refinishing stained doors takes more steps than painting.

  5. Removal and rehanging

Taking shutters down gives a better finish but adds time.

  6. Color change

Going dark to light or light to dark can need more coats.

What we handle

Front door painting

A front door is handled every day and seen by every visitor, so the finish has to be smooth and hard. We remove the knob, deadbolt and knocker, clean and sand the door, fill dings, and prime bare wood or glossy old paint. Two coats of exterior enamel are brushed on in the right order, and the door is left open to dry before it closes against the weatherstripping. Bold colors like navy, deep green and black are popular choices.

Shutters painted off the house on sawhorses

Shutter painting

Shutters fade and chalk in the sun, and vinyl shutters can't be painted with just any paint. Wood shutters are scraped, sanded and primed; vinyl shutters are cleaned and painted with a vinyl-safe color no darker than the original, so they don't warp from heat. We usually take shutters down to paint all sides and edges, then rehang them with fresh fasteners. It's one of the quickest ways to change the look of a house. Broken louvers and loose hinges are fixed while they're down.

Garage door painting

Steel garage doors fade, chalk and sometimes rust at the bottom edge where water sits. We wash off the chalk, sand and spot-prime rust with a rust-inhibiting primer, and apply exterior acrylic in a color that suits the house. Dark colors on a garage door facing west can get very hot, so we'll mention that when you choose. Wood garage doors are treated like any exterior wood: scraped, primed and painted or stained. Weatherstripping at the bottom is checked while we're there.

Exterior door refinishing

Stained wood and fiberglass doors lose their clear finish in the sun, turn gray or blotchy and start to crack. Refinishing means sanding or stripping the old finish, restaining if needed, and applying several coats of spar urethane or an exterior clear coat that blocks UV. Fiberglass doors with a wood-grain texture are cleaned, stained with a gel stain and clear-coated. Doors in full sun need their clear coat renewed more often than sheltered ones. Storm doors are removed so the main door can be finished properly.

Around Atlanta

Doors and shutters on Atlanta's classic houses

Buckhead's stately brick colonials usually carry full sets of shutters and a formal front door, and on those houses the door and shutter colors do most of the work of updating the look without touching the brick. Around Grant Park, where larger historic homes near the park perimeter are some of the most valuable in the neighborhood, original wood doors are refinished rather than replaced, with the prep and clear coats that old wood needs.
