Ceiling painting
Ceiling painting in Atlanta, from yellowed flats to two-story vaults
Ceilings get skipped in most repaints, and then the fresh walls make them look tired. A clean, flat ceiling makes a room brighter than any wall color change.

Quick answer
Ceiling painting in Atlanta usually comes due when walls are repainted, every 5 to 7 years for most interiors, and shows yellowing, cooking film or stains the walls don't. We clean, seal stains with a stain-blocking primer, and roll two coats of flat ceiling paint in straight passes to avoid lap marks. Vaulted and two-story ceilings are painted from planks or staging.

The job
Why ceilings are harder than walls
Light from windows rakes across a ceiling and shows every lap mark and missed spot. We use a dedicated flat ceiling paint such as Benjamin Moore Waterborne Ceiling Paint or a Sherwin-Williams ceiling line and roll it in continuous passes.
Stains, smoke film and water marks bleed through ordinary paint, so they're sealed first with a stain blocker from Zinsser or Kilz.

What we handle
Ceilings we paint

Flat ceiling repaint
Standard ceilings in bedrooms, living rooms and halls, usually repainted alongside the walls. We cover floors and furniture, fill cracks along the drywall seams, and caulk the gap at the crown or wall line so the edge stays crisp. The ceiling is cut in along the walls by brush, then rolled in straight, overlapping passes while the edge is still wet. Two coats of flat paint give an even finish that doesn't show roller marks in side light. Light fixtures are loosened and painted behind.

Nicotine and cooking-stain ceiling repaint
Ceilings in homes with smokers or heavy cooking turn yellow or brown over the years, and the stain bleeds through regular paint almost immediately. We wash the ceiling with a degreaser, rinse it, and seal the whole surface with a solvent or shellac-based stain blocker before painting. Lingering odor is sealed in at the same time. After an actual fire, soot needs a different process, covered on our fire and smoke damage page. This is common in rentals and in houses being prepared for sale, where the ceiling is often the first thing buyers notice. Walls usually get the same treatment in these rooms.
Vaulted and high ceiling painting
Two-story foyers, great rooms and stairwells can't be reached from a stepladder. We set up planks, extension ladders or rolling scaffolding suited to the room and the stairs, and protect the floor and railing below. Long poles and wide rollers keep the finish even across large spans. The cut line where a high ceiling meets the wall is brushed by hand, and we check it from the floor in daylight before taking the staging down. Nothing is left leaning on the walls overnight.
Tray and coffered ceiling painting
Tray and coffered ceilings have steps, beams and inside corners that make them slower to paint and easy to get wrong. Many owners paint the recessed panels a slightly darker or contrasting color to show the architecture, which means precise cut lines on every step. We caulk the joints at every beam and step, brush the edges and profiles, and roll the flat fields. Crown molding inside the tray is painted in trim enamel to set it apart. Any rope lighting in the tray is protected first.
Around Atlanta
When Atlanta ceilings come due
Atlanta interiors generally need repainting every 5 to 7 years, and ceilings follow the same clock even though most homeowners skip them in between. By the time the walls are being redone, the ceiling has usually picked up a cooking film in the kitchen, a faint gray over the heating vents and yellowing near lamps, so we look at it on every interior walk-through and quote it separately so you can decide.
