Drywall installation

Drywall installation in Atlanta, hung and finished ready for paint

New drywall only looks right when the finishing is right. Hanging the board is quick; taping, mudding and sanding it flat enough to paint is where the skill shows.

Quick answer

Drywall installation in Atlanta covers hanging new board on framing, taping the joints, applying several coats of joint compound, sanding and texturing to match, then priming and painting. Moisture-resistant board goes in bathrooms and basements, and the finish level is chosen for the room's lighting. We finish the drywall and paint it, so there's no gap between trades.

The job

What a drywall installation includes

Board is chosen for the room: standard half-inch board from makers like USG Sheetrock, National Gypsum or CertainTeed for most walls, moisture-resistant or Georgia-Pacific DensArmor board in wet and below-grade spaces.

Sheets are screwed to the framing with staggered seams, then joints are taped, coated, sanded and checked under a work light. The finished wall is primed and painted by the same crew.

What moves the price

What moves the price of drywall installation

  1. Square footage

More board means more hanging, taping and finishing.

  2. Ceilings and height

Ceilings and tall walls take longer and need lifts or scaffolding.

  3. Board type

Moisture- and mold-resistant board costs more than standard.

  4. Finish level

Smooth walls in strong light need more coats or a skim.

  5. Texture matching

Orange peel or knockdown adds a step.

  6. Demolition and haul-away

Removing old walls or paneling adds labor.

What we handle

Drywall work we install

Basement and bonus room drywall

Finishing a basement or a bonus room over a garage usually means framing already in place and a lot of open wall to cover. Below grade, we check for moisture before any board goes up, since drywall against a damp foundation wall grows mold behind it. Moisture-resistant board is used near the slab and in any bathroom. Ceilings are hung first, then walls, with seams staggered and kept away from door and window corners where cracks start. The finished room is primed and painted at the end.

Wall and ceiling replacement

Water damage, old paneling, failed plaster or a remodel can leave walls and ceilings that need new board rather than patching. We remove the old material, check framing, insulation and any wiring or plumbing exposed along the way, and hang new drywall flush with the surrounding walls. Where new board meets old plaster, the thickness difference is shimmed so the transition is smooth. The joint between old and new is taped and feathered wide so it doesn't show once painted.

Moisture-resistant board for baths

Bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens behind sinks need board that tolerates humidity better than standard drywall. We install moisture-resistant or mold-resistant board in those areas, finish it with a setting compound, and prime it with a primer suited to humid rooms before paint. Inside shower and tub surrounds, drywall of any kind isn't the right material; cement board or a foam board system with a waterproof membrane goes there instead, and we'll say so if that's what the room needs.

Taping, finishing and texture

Finishing is where drywall succeeds or fails. Joints are taped and bedded, then covered in two or three progressively wider coats, each sanded smooth before the next. Corners get metal or paper-faced bead. The finish level is matched to the room: walls hit by strong side light from windows need a higher finish or a skim coat so joints don't show. Where the rest of the house has orange peel or knockdown texture, we spray and match it so new walls blend in.

Around Atlanta

New walls in a changing part of Atlanta

Drywall jobs in Atlanta houses tend to fall into two kinds of space. Finished basements need a moisture check against the foundation before any board goes up, and older homes being renovated need new board married to old plaster, where the thickness difference is shimmed so the joint disappears once painted. Knowing which situation a room is in decides the board, the fasteners and how the seams are finished.
